Fishing the last few months had, for me, become a little boring. The majority of the charter boats out of Dover had been chasing bass, codling and bream that have been scattered around. Although all fishing is generally good fun it can become hard work.
It was therefore quite a relief when the Plaice and Turbot appeared. I decided on our last few trips in August and September to target the Turbot as we had been catching quite a few Plaice up to 4lbs and wanted a bit more of a challenge.
When I said to one of the crews that we'd catch a few Turbot, the response I got was a few blank looks (I think they thought I was off my trolley as they apparently thought you can only catch Turbot off the Cornish coast!). Nevertheless, we caught our bait - mackerel were plentiful, and after trying to drum into the crew not to strike the bites but how to fish for them, we landed our first Turbot. We also caught decent size Gurnards and Plaice. By the end of the day everyone was more than happy with our day's catch as we had caught a nice selection with the biggest Turbot weighing 5.5lbs.

On a day out with family and friends my youngest son, Toby (8), decided to show us how to do it by landing both the most and the largest Turbot of the day! Total caught this day was 8 along with some nice Plaice, Gurnard, Garfish & jumbo mackerel by the score.

Early September and we were still having a lot of success and on one particular day we had more than a dozen Turbot including one very good sized one weighing 8.5lbs caught by Gary Lawrance. Trevor Little also had a very close runner up:
